Cynical Cycles explores modern social standards and how they have a direct impact on human behavior towards their communities as well as the environment. Oppression and discrimination have an interconnected nature that fuels humanity's moral compass and individual egos. These intersecting hierarchies segregate individuals by economic status, racial backgrounds, different genders and sexual orientations, as well as the spectrum of an individual's abilities. Similarly, humans exploit nature and the Earth for their own benefit and greed due to the constructed concept of human exceptionalism.
Referencing the food chain and human exceptionalism, the artist creates a digestible image for viewers of all political stances to understand her perspective. In this realm, individuals are transformed into human hybrids, their worth corresponding with levels on the food chain along with the rank of organisms on the Human Exceptionalism scale, inspired by Firelei Báez.
The hanging mobile's parallel sides depict the brutality of how man treats one another, a dog-eat-dog world that we are shielded from in the safety of our homes. One side shows animals engaged in human situations. The other side shows the dehumanization of marginalized and stigmatized people by animal-human hybrids. The series of vignettes shows a digestible sequence for viewers of all political stances to understand an alternative perspective on human nature.
